Dressage Arena Layout

In general, all HFDA Tests are the same as those used by the real USEF, USDF and FEI organizations. These tests belong to those RL organizations, but I am providing copies here as reference materials -- the HFDA is meant to be an educational resource on the sport of dressage, and what better way for you to learn about dressage than to see the real-life tests! :)

Green As Grass
The "Green As Grass" level is meant as an introduction to dressge for pre-Training level horses. The USDF does offer two "Intro" tests, and many other state or local associations offer their own "Green As Grass" tests. The HFDA's "Green As Grass" tests are based on those used by the IDCTA (Illinois Dressage and Combined Training Association).

  • Green As Grass Test 1 (Walk-Trot)

  • Green As Grass Test 2 (Walk-Trot)

  • Green As Grass Test 3 (Walk-Trot)

  • Green As Grass Test 4 (Walk-Trot-Canter)

  • Note that there is no "freestyle" option for horses at this level - that doesn't start until 1st level.

    Training Level through Fourth Level
These tests are the same as those used by the USEF.

  • Training Test 1

  • Training Test 2

  • Training Test 3

  • Training Test 4

  • Note that there is no "freestyle" option for horses at the training level - that doesn't start until 1st level.

  • First Level Test 1

  • First Level Test 2

  • First Level Test 3

  • First Level Test 4

  • First Level Freestyle * (see note below)

  • Second Level Test 1

  • Second Level Test 2

  • Second Level Test 3

  • Second Level Test 4

  • Second Level Freestyle * (see note below)

  • Third Level Test 1

  • Third Level Test 2

  • Third Level Test 3

  • Third Level Test 4 -- NOTE, in RL, there is no Third Level Test 4. As it is included anyway in some HFSHC shows, it may be assumed that the HFDA has created a ficticious "Test 4" containing the same compulsary movements as other tests of this level, but in a different sequence.

  • Third Level Freestyle * (see note below)

  • Fourth Level Test 1

  • Fourth Level Test 2

  • Fourth Level Test 3

  • Fourth Level Test 4 -- NOTE, in RL, there is no Fourth Level Test 4. As it is included anyway in some HFSHC shows, it may be assumed that the HFDA has created a ficticious "test 4" containing the same compulsary movements as other tests of this level, but in a different sequence.

  • Fourth Level Freestyle * (see note below)

    * Freestyle: Rider composes own routine, to music, which must include compulsary movements from that level. Judge rates movements as well as artistic attributes (harmony, choreography, degree of difficulty, musicality). Riders may NOT include "above the level" movements (those found only at higher level tests), and will be penalized for each above-the-level movement performed.

    FEI Pony
The FEI Pony test is an INTERNATIONAL test, and utilized by countries other than the US. It may be considered roughly equivalent with second level in difficulty. Only equines 14.2hh or under may compete.

  • Pony FEI - Preliminary Test

  • Pony FEI - Individual Test *Primary Test*

Prix St George through Grand Prix
These FEI level tests are considered the highest level of dressage competition, and these tests exist on an INTERNATIONAL scale! Note, there are not multiple tests at these FEI levels, just the one test and a freestyle option. This level of competition is EXTREMELY strenous...one test plus freestyle is plenty for a horse to handle!

  • Prix St George

  • Prix St George Freestyle -- NOTE, in RL, horses at this level would actually compete at the "Intermediate I" freestyle, but for HFSHC purposes, we will permit a freestyle equivalent just for the Prix St George level horses to compete, seperately from the Intermediate horses.

  • Intermediate I

  • Intermediate Freestyle (aka Intermediate I Freestyle)

  • Intermediate II

  • Intermediate II Freestyle -- NOTE, in RL, there is no Intermediate II Freestyle class. For HFSHC purposes, a single "Intermediate Freestyle" class has been utilized, in which both level I and II horses compete, though a ficticious Intermediate II Freestyle class may be permitted for just those horses competing in Intermediate II to perform seperate from other divisions, as the Int II level test does include movements not seen at the Int I level.

  • Grand Prix

  • Grand Prix Special (same basic movements as Grand Prix but at a faster pace and higher standard of excellence.)

  • Grand Prix Freestyle

    FEI Young Horse Dressage
~~ Note, all FEI YHD tests to be performed with snaffle bits, and whips may NOT be carried. ~~

  • Four-Year-Old Test

  • Five-Year-Old Prelim Test

  • Five-Year-Old Final Test

  • Six-Year-Old Prelim Test

  • Six-Year-Old Final Test
